Ephemeral Age

09 November 2023, Santa Rosa House

Ephemeral: something momentary, transient, fleeting, a moment in time.

Ephemeroptera, on the other hand, is a species of insect, apparently the one with the shortest life span ever, about 1 hour and 30 minutes in total.

We might call certain phases of human life ephemeral, such as adolescence a time when the perception of self and the outside world changes, and it is precisely this theme that Roberta Savelli investigates. She portrays, in a delicate and sincere way the adolescent world that to an adult gaze very often appears incomprehensible and very distant.

Everyday we experience fleeting moments, which do not involve particular changes or reflections; even images can be ephemeral, like the millions of photographs we see by scrolling through instagram feedback, or watching television, Valerie Chua traps some of these daily images and experiences in her own works, creating compositions; freezing gestures, such as the moment of trying to pet a cat on the street, moments that if observed more carefully could trigger even very strong and deep emotions but that in everyday life we do not have time to perceive.

Valentina Biasetti's works play between presence and absence, fullness and emptiness, the concrete and the ephemeral.

The subjects portrayed look like modern nymphs, eternal maidens who immerse themselves in water with soft cloths in a suspended and poetic, undefined space that leaves room for the imagination of every viewer.

Ephemeral can be our memories, Zuh Dai analyzes with her sculptural works how a memory can change its state from a vivid and clear memory to a vague and fuzzy one, no matter how hard we may strive to keep a moment intact in our memory it is bound to fade, to change shape and color, despite our will.

Aritsts Bio

Valentina Biasetti

Born in Parma (1979). Graduated with honors from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna.

My artistic research always starts from the drawing as a necessity and desire to understand the surrounding world transformed by imagination. The pencil plays on the sheet guided by a primordial instinct and intertwines signs, patterns, struggles, echoes of stories that arise from the depths until they take shape, body and weight.

Valerie Chua

Valerie Chua’s artistic practice revolves around the appropriation of image stock and both personal and public film images as her primary subject matter. Her works capture the multifaceted nature of identity construction, often played out in our era of social media and visual culture.

Chua’s paintings explore the human impulse to curate, hoard, and mimic, which shapes the creation of a public persona that aligns with an inner sense of self. Through her use of familiar and ubiquitous images, Chua presents an incisive commentary on contemporary culture, underscoring the power and malleability of visual representation in shaping our perception of ourselves.

Born in the Philippines, Chua earned her Humanities degree in 2010 before applying for continued education at the New York Academy of Art (NYAA) in 2013, while working as an assistant to artist, Erik Jones. Her over five years of experience as a commercial illustrator and watercolorist served as an essential foundation for her current artistic output.

Chua’s work has been displayed in various exhibitions worldwide, including the United States, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, and the Philippines. She is also works as a partner at a Southeast Asian artist-run cooperative, Faculty Projects.

Roberta Savelli

Roberta Savelli, born in 1969, lives and works in Milan where she attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts.

The central theme of her work is human beings and their relationships, especially in the adolescent/youth phase. In addition to her painting practice, portrayed individually or in choral compositions, humans and relationships are also at the center of her video and installation works.

The poetics of her research can be sensed in these words by V.P. Mosco:

"There is a sphere in which things and words do not correspond, in this sphere protected by

an insurmountable fence a game takes place, of which the noises and cries of the privileged (or disturbed) within reach us who are outside it. What the game is about is unknown."

Roberta Savelli has exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and museums, in Milan: PAC, Museo Campari, Palazzo Archinto, Fabbrica del Vapore, Palazzo della Permanente, Palazzo dell'Arengario and Palazzo Ducale a Genova. She has been selected for Dynamo Camp art factory, Cairo Prize and BienNolo 2021.

She has worked with Marcorossi artecontemporanea galleries in Milan, Doris Ghetta in Ortisei and Rossana Ciocca in Milan.
